BOSTON, MA — Over 450 waste collection workers represented by Teamsters Local 25 hit the picket line early Tuesday morning, launching a strike against Republic Services after the expiration of their contract just after midnight. The action affects waste and recycling service for hundreds of thousands of residents across 17 cities and towns in Massachusetts.
The strike comes as workers demand fair wages, improved benefits, and safe working conditions—basic rights that Republic Services has failed to deliver on despite posting billions in profits.
“If your rubbish is piling up on the Fourth of July, remember who’s responsible for it: the white-collar criminals who run Republic Services,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien.
While the company has publicly claimed to offer “competitive wages,” its refusal to negotiate in good faith has left essential workers with no choice but to take a stand.
Republic Escalates with Baseless Accusations
In an attempt to shift the narrative, Republic Services issued inflammatory statements Tuesday afternoon accusing Teamsters and supporters of “dangerous actions.” The company alleged tire slashing and harassment at its Revere facility, but provided no evidence, and neither the Teamsters nor local authorities have confirmed the claims.
These accusations are nothing more than a corporate smear campaign—aimed at intimidating workers and discrediting a legitimate strike.
“Republic should be negotiating a fair contract instead of spinning baseless narratives,” said a Local 25 spokesperson. “Our members are standing up for safety, dignity, and respect on the job.”
Community and Political Support Grows
The striking workers have received strong backing from local elected officials and the community. Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, Revere Mayor Patrick Keefe, and State Senators Lydia Edwards and Paul Feeney have all expressed support for the workers’ fight.
As the standoff continues, Teamsters remain united and resolute.
